“Primitive Cloth” Special Feature

Text from gallery hakuden:

Primitive Cloth refers to fabrics made from plant fibers such as wisteria, ramie, hemp, kudzu, banana, and paper mulberry, crafted long before cotton was introduced to Japan. This issue is composed of valuable writings that chronicle the thoughts and experiences of individuals who have dedicated themselves to primitive cloth, earnestly contemplating it and pursuing the very origins of fabric.

In Kamiseya, Tango, Kyoto, Mr. Yasushi Inomoto, who has long dedicated himself to preserving wisteria weaving, speaks about wisteria cloth. Mr. Genbei Yamaguchi, who has traveled throughout Japan visiting makers of primitive cloth, offers his uncompromising perspective. Mr. Kei Kawasaki of gallery Kei, who once ran an antique cloth shop in Kyoto City, shares his encounters with primitive cloth. Mr. Shinichiro Yoshida, a foremost authority on hemp, and his contemporary art endeavors;
Korean contemporary photographer Koo Bon-sung's depictions of Korea's Andong cloth; Korean hemp cloth still being produced today; an interview with the craft studio Panksusha on Andong cloth and Niigata's woven cloth; COSMIC WONDER's ”Ryugu-koromo” primitive cloth; and the author's recommended books on primitive cloth.

The cover paper is made from two types of handmade paper: Tsha-shō paper, crafted from the native Bhutanese plant Daphne and used for scriptures, and Leshō paper, made from Daphne and paper mulberry. Printing is done using letterpress and stencil printing. We would be delighted if you could take a moment to hold it in your hands and examine it.
